Blair.com Affiliates should know what THAT means!

Who's looking for sheets?

http://www.blair.com/e/novelty-printed-sheet-set-extra-pillowcases/3860.uts
These sheets are available in Twin, Full, Queen and King, and 15 beautiful patterns. Yes... you read that right -- 15 patterns!
Best of all, the price on 14 of the 15 patterns is now reduced, making them an even better value, and they're rated a bit over 4 out of 5 stars.

Don't take our word for it. Here's what Blair shopper "Phee" from NY had to say about them:

These are the best I've bought in years. I have sheets purchased more than thirty years ago that are still nice. And then I have some that were purchased only a few years ago that have no elastic left in the fitted sheet or the top sheet is simply not wide enough. I have microfiber ones that are so silky they won't stay on the bed. These... are nice. Silky but not so much that they pop off when you turn over. Come out of the dryer reasonably wrinkle free. Pretty (I have the blue rose pattern). It's too soon to know how the elastic will last but I'd definitely recommend these. Pretty patterns, nice feel, easy wash and dry. I'm sold.

Blair.com's Appearances in NASCAR! Is This Real???

Many Blair.com affiliates will think I am a photoshop guru when they take a look at these photos.  But that's not the case.  These photos are REAL!  In the early 2000's, Blair.com dabbled in NASCAR.

If my memory is still good, it all started with a back quarter panel on Kenny Wallace's #27 Pontiac at the Daytona 500 in 2001.  He started 23rd and finished in 25th place.  This was the race that took the life of racing legend Dale Earnhardt on the final lap.

Blair then hooked up with Midwest Transit Racing.  They were lacking a sponsor, and Blair agreed to work with them on their #50 Chevy driven by journeyman driver, Rick Mast.  Blair.com was the primary sponsor for 7 races in 2001 that the team qualified for, including Bristol, Martinsville, Richmond, Charlotte, Pocono, Daytona and Loudon. (The red car at the top is an image of Rick Mast driving the Blair.com #50 Chevy in front of Dale Earnhardt Jr. in the Bud car and Michael Waltrip in the NAPA car.)

In 2003, Blair.com was the primary sponsor for the #49 Dodge driven by Kenny Schrader at Pocono.  The team had several sponsors during the season, including BAM Racing, 1-800-CALL-ATT and Dakota Imaging.  Blair decided to jump on board for the Pocono race, since it was in our home state of Pennsylvania.  Unfortunately, Ken Schrader was out of the race on lap 7, due to a crash that had the car flipping end over end several times. (That's the #49 Blair.com Dodge in the bottom photo courtesy of jayski.com.)

Also in 2003, Blair was on the #32 Pontiac driven by Ricky Craven.  The primary sponsor was Tide, and Blair's CustomWear division served as the official clothing sponsor of the PPI Motorsports team.

That was a long time ago, but it's fun to look back at the memories from time to time.

Pointelle Knit Cardigan -- a true customer favorite!

Every once in awhile, I run across a product that catches my attention.

A Blair customer, "Sue20", recently reviewed our Pointelle Knit Cardigan:

It exactly met my need! This sweater was purchased to wear on a trip to the Canadian Rookies. The goal was to have a covering as the temperatures changed throughout the day as the.altitude changed. It was just what was needed. It complemented every outfit, dressy or casual.

When I went to the product page on Blair.com, I noticed that this product not only is rated 4/5 stars by our customers, but there are 108 reviews!  That's a lot of reviews!

Why, of course!

Here's an ad from the 1920's (I think) when Blair was known as the New Process Company. It's a simple return postcard with an interesting sales pitch. The front is pre-addressed to John L. Blair, with "Why, of course!"

On the back with the drawing of a dapper gentleman and the headline, "All right -- send it along!" is the following copy:

Mr. Blair:

Your confidence in that "Any Weather" Topcoat is refreshing. I like to do business with a man who believes in his product.

You may send me an "Any Weather" Coat in my exact size, postpaid, on your fair and square offer of a week's examination and trial -- FREE.

I agree to examine it promptly, try it out -- WEAR it -- and either return it to you within a week or send you check for the special price of $14.85.

At the bottom framed in the red box, it reads:

If you remit in full now, we'll include a smart, stylish Cap of the same fabric as your Coat -- free of charge. Simply enclose this signed card in an envelope, with your check.

No man who wants to look his best could have EVER turned down THAT offer!

Just imagine it... ME in a sweater vest!

I don't know that I had ever worn a sweater vest before.  Maybe when I was 4 years old, but that's it.  I have no recent recollection of wearing a sweater vest... or even wanting to put one on.

I don't like sweaters in general, and I typically don't get chilled.  Let's face it -- an additional bulky layer isn't exactly what I need to look my best, especially in August!

On a warm Sunday evening in New York City, I attended the ShareASale "Under the Stars" party while attending Affiliate Summit East.  I found several people to chat with, and while we were in a conversation, I noticed a pile of stuff on a table all sporting the ShareASale logo.  I touched one of the sweater vests so see what it was.

"Put one on!", said Kim Rowley of Key Internet Marketing.  Not wanting to say no, I simply told Kim that I was sure they didn't have my size.  We checked, and sure enough, there was an XL on top. I put it on, and do you know what?!?  It was pretty comfortable!  There were no cuffs to roll up because the sleeves were too long, and being a V-neck instead of crew neck didn't make me feel like I was being strangled.  Soon after I put on my sweater vest, others began doing the same.

"You need to wear that to Brian's keynote address tomorrow," said Kim.  "We're all going to wear them in honor of Brian."  You see... Brian Littleton, the fearless leader of ShareASale, was presenting the keynote address the following morning at the Affiliate Summit, and he is famous for his sweater vests.  I agreed, and wore the sweater vest the rest of the evening.  There were so many other folks wearing them at the party, I felt like I was part of a club!

When I got back to the hotel, I chatted with my wife on the phone.  I told her that I had been given, and was wearing a "sleeveless sweater".  She informed me that it was called a sweater vest.  I told her I was comfortable in it, and that I was required to wear it again the following morning.

When I arrived at the conference, there was a large group of people at the entry to where Brian's presentation was about to begin, and they were all wearing sweater vests.  But this wasn't just any group of people.  It was a group of people who could be considered legends in the industry.  Many were friends, but I again felt uncomfortable about wearing a sweater vest.  I didn't feel I really belonged in this group. As I slowly approached the group, I was told to hurry up and put my sweater vest on.  I did, and proudly entered the room with the rest of the group.

Brian Littleton's keynote address was one of the best of I've ever had the pleasure of hearing! (You can watch a video of Brian's keynote address here.)  It was the perfect blend of information, comedy and friendliness Brian is well-known for.

Once the keynote address was over, I took my sweater vest off because it was getting pretty warm in the crowded room.  But as quickly as my sweater vest was off, it was back on again because I was informed that we were going to take a picture of everyone in their sweater vests with the reason for them -- Brian Littleton.  I put it back on, and climbed up on the stage for several photos.  I was a part of a group that included affiliate marketing pros like Angel Djambazov, Pat Grady, Todd Farmer, Missy Ward, Melissa Salas, Mike Allen, and  Kim Rowley just to name a few!

Here's a great looking Scandia Woods Windowpane Sweater Vest from Blair.  I can't guarantee that it will make you feel as good or as comfortable as mine did for me, but I am proud to now have my sweater vest in my closet!

A Bump in the Road for Jet.com

I found this article pretty interesting.  While the idea of affiliates offering points or cash back is nothing new, Jet.com has added a new wrinkle that has some of their competitors and other merchants a bit keyed up.  Jet.com has affiliate links on their website to dozens of merchants.  If a shopper makes a purchase from one of those links, they receive "Jet Cash".  What has some merchants upset is that the "Jet Cash" earned is used toward the purchase of products on Jet.com.  So... a shopper can make a purchase on 1-800-Petmeds.com, earn "Jet Cash" from that purchase (which is paid for with commissions Jet.com earned from the sale at 1-800-Petmeds) and then purchase future pet products from Jet.com utilizing the earned "Jet Cash".

There's a good chance Jet.com would steal that customer from 1-800-Petmeds.  Here's the article from PCMag

Shopping site Jet.com wants to be the next Amazon, but it appears to be off to a rough start.
As reported by The Wall Street Journal, Jet had to remove from its site links to several big-name retailers after those retailers objected.

Why I Love Affiiate Marketing, Part II

A few months back, I posted why I love affiliate marketing.  It was a challenge from a close industry friend, Kim Rowley, and really got me reflecting on what affiliate marketing meant to me.

Well... I'm going to add a quick addition to that post.  I said I enjoyed all the friendships I made over the years, and this is where I'm going to offer a bit of proof.

A few weeks ago, marketing legend Jim Kukral said he and some friends were going fishing on Lake Ontario, and were looking for a 4th.  I jumped at the opportunity!  After some date changes, only Jim and his brother, Ken, were able to make the trip, so I was given the opportunity to bring along my son, Jake.

Last Friday, Jake and I headed to Kent, NY to hop on Buc-A-Roo Sportfishing's boat with Jim and Ken.  Jake and I arrived early and got to watch the boat being prepped.  Jim and Ken pulled into the parking lot a short time later.  Our drive was a bit under 3 hours, and theirs was closer to 4 hours.  After some handshakes, hugs and introductions, we were on the boat and heading out on Lake Ontario.

This was something both Jake and I had wanted to do for a long time, and it was affiliate marketing, and my friendship with Jim, that had afforded me the opportunity.

Some takeaways from the trip:
  • The Sea-Band things didn't work for me nearly as well as I had hoped.
  • I wasn't nearly the conversationalist I had hoped to be due to the prior takeaway.
  • Jake and I took a 6 pack of Labatt with us, and returned with 4.  2 for Jake, 0 for me, due to the first takeaway.
  • The wind gets extremely cold on Lake Ontario.
  • I'm not sure if ALL the superstitions were correct, but it DID seem we caught fish after the first beer was popped, the first cigarette was smoked, the Crown Apple was cracked, whenever the boat was in a turned, when a bit of popcorn was tossed in the water, etc.
  • Capt. Chas and his First Mate, Aaron, were a class act, and I would highly recommend Buc-A-Roo Sportfishing to anyone looking to catch fish on Lake Ontario.
  • It was great having an opportunity to share this adventure with my son.
  • While I'm not a big fan of salmon, fresh salmon in a soy/ginger marinade is quite tasty.
  • Though my new friendship with Ken Kukral isn't exactly due to affiliate marketing, I met Ken through Jim, so I think it counts.
Thanks again Jim and Ken! Jake and I truly appreciated the opportunity and look forward to doing it again.

Why I Love Affiliate Marketing

It's my turn to tell the world why I love performance marketing, after being challlenged by Kim Rowley.

While one of the most obvious reasons (which I will touch on later) is all the wonderful friends I've made in the industry over the years, I'll start with one that isn't as well known, and a bit more personal.

Back in 2000,  I found myself trapped in a job at Blair that I didn't enjoy, and my life outside of work was being turned upside down.  I was in a very dark place, and I didn't know where my life was headed.  I was doing my best to roll with the punches, but it felt like every morning I'd step out of bed and would soon be hit with another roundhouse.

And then one day, I got a call from Jeff Parnell, Blair's recently hired Director of E-commerce, to come down to his office for a minute.  As I strolled down the stairs, my thoughts were, "What now!?!"  I had no idea how much things were about to change.

Jeff told me that Blair.com was going to have an affiliate program through Dynamic Trade (the predecessor to Performics/GAN) and he wanted me to manage it.  Soon after I told him I'd be happy to, I realized I had virtually no idea what affiliate marketing was!  I moved from Advertising to E-Commerce and dove into learning whatever I could about affiliate marketing.  I've been loving it ever since!

I followed everything I could at ABestWeb, and learned a great deal from the folks there, and their fearless leader, Haiko De Poel.  I attended conferences and met affiliates and other managers.  One of the things that amazed me was how willing other merchants were to discuss their business and offer guidance.  Two of my early mentors were Jamie Birch (he was with Coldwater Creek) and Brook Schaaf (during his tenure at Shoes.com).  I was learning and making friends fast.

I've always been impressed by the ingenuity and entrepreneurial spirit of so many I've met in affiiate marketing.  At a conference in the early 2000's, I met Zac Johnson (and his dad), a teenager who had more knowledge of performance marketing than I could ever hope to have.  I've watched Jamie and Brook form their own companies.  And I've been along for the ride with Shawn Collins and Missy Ward, after taking part in their first Affiliate Summit and watching it grow to an industry powerhouse over the years!

But in the end, my love of performance marketing is all about the relationships, and friends I've made over the years.  In addition to the folks named above, there are literally hundreds more.  When I have a problem/concern/idea, I know I can call and chat with David, Kim or Karen.  I had the two best contacts a manager could have at GAN with Ashley Gull and Megan Lutz.  My fiance is always a wonderful supporter, and hears me talking about people in the industry so much, that she actually knows who many of the people are when I mention a name.  She even follows some in the industry now, and it's not uncommon for her to say, "Did you see Zac's latest post?"

I like to tell people that I'm the Andy Sipowicz of affiliate marketing.  The cast of characters changes every year while I continue to sit at the same desk.  And while that is one of the similarities, I truly believe there is another.  When NYPD Blue first aired, the Dennis Franz character was abrupt, surly and often times downright mean.  His life was in a downward spiral.  By the time the series ended, Andy Sipowicz still had problems now and again, but he was at peace with himself.

I can identify with that.
